Cordova

Yesterday we spent the afternoon in Córdoba exploring the old Jewish quarter and the amazingly beautiful mosque.

The Juderia is a maze of about 14 streets, very narrow and many now filled with tourist shops and cafes. But gorgeous- little plazas, white houses with flower pots.

The old mosque, extended over some centuries is one of the most beautiful buildings. Following the expulsion of the Moors and Jews, the Christians built a cathedral inside the mosque, an act of extraordinary cultural and religious vandalism. Fortunately it only occupies about 8% of the floor area. And as our guide emphasized it probably ensured the survival of the mosque itself.
