Have spent some time on this cold and wet day at the Centro de Arts Reina Sofia where we saw Picasso's Guernica. Such a powerful piece. And a lot of contextual pieces as well - studies, photos of its development, letters about its loan to different galleries. Also a very propagandistic film about the Spanish Civil War from the Republican point of view, but very moving and interesting all the same. Grainy black and white film with film showing citizens fleeing from the fighting and sheltering from the bombs. Images of dead children and the attempt to defend Madrid. Means a lot more once you have visited a place.
Then wandered through some gorgeous narrow streets to the lively Plaza Santa Ana. A very friendly, family focused square. Being Saturday, there seemed to be more local Madrid residents around. At any rate, felt less like just a tourist Mecca. Walking through this part of town was very rewarding. Street signs are beautiful in this old part of town, and the names are sometimes very poetic, e.g. Calle Amor de Dios.
