Segrada Familia

We did a tour of the amazing Sagrada Familia, the still unfinished cathedral designed by Gaudi. The building has been funded by private donations and sponsorship; it has had a number of supervising architects and building managers; parts were destroyed by anarchists during the Spanish civil war; parts of the building have already had to be repaired even before the whole is finished. This gives it a lot in common with many medieval cathedrals in Europe. However it is utterly unlike anything else I have seen. While the outside is unusual and striking, it is when you walk inside that you feel truly awestruck. It is a temple of light, rich in symbolism and one of the most truly beautiful buildings I have ever been in. Donations and tour entries from visitors are allowing work to proceed at a faster pace and some hope that it will be finally completed in 2026, the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death. Mind you, only 8 of the 18 towers have been constructed so far.

  1. This must look so beautiful in reality. The photos themselves are pretty awe inspiring. I can't get my head around the idea of 18 towers. So glad to have read your posts now. Always good when you want to go back to places. Love, Cathie
