Getting lost on Edinburgh's buses

Another sunny day in Edinburgh and we kicked off the day by walking up to Edinburgh Castle through the daffodil-laden Princes Street park. A bit of a climb but great views. Decided not to par the £16.50 entry fee to the castle and walked down lots of steps to Grassmarket, the place where public executions used to take place. Now lots of cafes, bars etc.

We wanted to go to pretty Dean's Village and decided to catch a bus back to Princes street then change to a different one. A quick look at the bus map at the stop persuaded us that the next bus would eventually take us where we wanted to go, although we would have a long and meandering route.

In the spirit of exploration and thanks to a £4 day ticket we hopped on. As expected we had a ride through the south eastern suburbs- mainly council estates. Unexpectedly we the got to do the same route in reverse. Even more unexpectedly we then bypassed Princes Street and ended up wending our way through more suburbs in the south west. Our limited Edinburgh maps were no use to us at all and we had no idea where we were!

Eventually Ian persuaded me to get off, switch to a different bus route and see if it worked better. So the no. 22 became our friend and rescued us from the suburban wilds. It also appeared that we might have been able to catch the tram back into town, but we were even less sure of its route.

Finally made it into town again and changed to the Dean's Bridge bus - took all of 5 minutes compared with our previous 2 hours of wandering.

Dean's Village used to be the site of a number of water mills supplying grain to Edinburgh. It is situated close to the Waters of Leith in a steep little valley. It is very picturesque. We then decided to walk along the footpath following the waters of Leigh down to Leith-supposed to be a bit over two miles, although the distance signs along the way did not inspire confidence. Most of the walk is very pretty along the water, in woodland or parks or old railway cuttings. Finished up in the dock area again where we had tea.
The wonderful bus no 22 took us home at the end of the day.
